Testing of ¹⁴C outgassing from real graphite waste

Within WP5, Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy (CRDS) will be used as a novel, high-precision instrument to detect 14C outgassing from real graphite samples present at VTT (Finland).

The graphite samples were first analysed to obtain the total radiological content. Because of their radiological characteristics, the CRDS instrument had to be made transportable in order to transfer it to a suitable laboratory environment where the graphite measurements could take place.

The adaptation of the CRDS design into a transportable instrument will offer plenty of future opportunities to use it for field measurements on different materials and in different environments.
